The Windsor Symphony Orchestra connects people through music. Serving Windsor and Essex County since 1947, the WSO strives to fulfill its mandate by being engaged with and responsive to our community, resilient and nimble in the face of change, and committed to artistic excellence. WSO programming includes repertoire that reflects and celebrates the history and diversity our audience, from this region's early beginnings as a home to indigenous peoples and the development of a French settlement to its role as a terminus for the Underground Railroad and, today, being home to an increasingly diverse and vibrant immigrant population.
To ensure our efforts are relevant and important, the WSO works with community partners, collaborating on their initiatives and building programs that are authentic and resonant for the people they serve. As the only professional orchestra within a hundred-mile radius in Ontario, the WSO is committed to education, supporting the growth of music and culture, and nurturing artistic practice. In addition to a professional orchestra, the WSO also collaborates with non-professionals through its volunteer Chorus, Junior Youth Orchestra, Youth Orchestra, and C...ommunity Orchestra. The WSO regularly engages Ontario artists as soloists, creates programming to inspire students and aspiring artists, and works with education partners at all levels (grade school, high school, college, and university) in a shared commitment to education.
The WSO’s performance home is the Capitol Theatre, a city-owned heritage building and performance venue in the heart of Windsor. The Capitol Theatre was restored by the community to be an incubator for the arts. In addition to being the primary tenant of the theatre, the WSO is also the Manager of the building and responsible for creating and supporting opportunities for growth of the Capitol as a cultural hub in the City Centre.
