The Lansing Symphony Association, Inc. welcomes applications for the position of music director and conductor, available beginning in the 2027-2028 season.
The music director and conductor reports directly to the board and is responsible for the fulfillment of the orchestra’s artistic potential and its image in the community. They are responsible for the repertoire, programming and artistic production, and has ultimate authority for the selection, development, and replacement of musicians.
As the orchestra’s artistic leader, they must build and sustain the orchestra’s visibility and involvement in the community. The music director is expected to work closely with the executive director, board president, and staff in carrying out these responsibilities and to participate actively in the orchestra’s audience building and fundraising activities.
The ideal candidate is dynamic, innovative, and will possess exceptional musicianship and conducting skills; significant conducting experience, including significant work with professional musicians; knowledge of a broad range of repertoire; strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills; vision, passion, and ability to make symphonic music relevant and exciting for existing and new audiences. Previous or current music directorship or comparable experience preferred.
Lansing Symphony Orchestra (LSO) was founded in 1929 and has grown over the past 95 years into the professional orchestra it is today. As one of the oldest and most recognizable arts organizations in the mid-Michigan area, LSO impacts the lives of thousands of individuals each year through the power of music. The mission of LSO is to “enrich, educate, entertain, and inspire the people of our region through exceptional live musical experiences." The orchestra accomplishes this by presenting numerous public performances each season through its MasterWorks, Pops, Chamber Music, and Neighborhood Concerts. Additionally, LSO’s nationally recognized Composer-In-Residence and Education programs, including the Family Series, Young People’s Concert, and Preview Conversations, reach preschoolers to adults and are helping to educate and shape the next generation of musicians and music enthusiasts.
