Type: Full Time
Salary: Starting at $45,000.
Preferred Education:
As Theater Director and Teacher you will be responsible for overseeing and developing Darrow’s exceptional Theater program. The Darrow Theater Workshop is an after-school program which stages two main-stage productions within a school year, a Winter Theater Production, at the conclusion of the fall sports season, and Darrow on the Fringe, a series of fully student-authored, staged, directed, and acted single-act plays. In addition, you will be expected to teach 2-3 semester-long Performing Arts elective courses each semester. It will be an advantage if some of the courses are able to be cross-listed with the English Department. Examples of such electives Darrow has offered in recent years include Playwriting, Performance Studies, introductory and Advanced Acting, Introduction to Film, and Experiential Film.
As Co-Coordinator of the Center for Musicianship and Performance, you will be responsible, in collaboration with the Music Director, for creating and implementing a curriculum where students will learn how to become critical and creative problem solvers and be exposed to creative outlets for personal expression while learning the value of observing from multiple perspectives. You will ensure that students have the opportunity to engage with Darrow’s local community (the Berkshires and the New York Capital District) through visits with professionals in the field, museum exhibitions, and college programs.
As the Theater and Educational Outreach Coordinator, you will be responsible for establishing and maintaining contacts with alumni, particularly those in the film and theater industry. You will work with our Communications and Advancement offices to generate materials for all Darrow Theater Workshop productions, newsletter blurbs, and information regarding the use of the theater by outside groups. You will act as a liaison and participate in site visits when outside guests use the theater. You are responsible for production management and budgeting for both the fall and spring productions. You will participate in meetings and decisions related to theater space updates (lighting equipment, sound system, stage construction, etc.) and help coordinate theater space use and upkeep for the campus. You will act as a logistical coordinator for performing arts events on and off campus. You are responsible for researching and connecting with performing arts organizations off campus and in the greater New York area. The goal of these connections is to develop opportunities for students to perform, collaborate, visit, and connect with professional artists within and beyond the Berkshire communities, as well as to establish relationships in order to open the door for future events that the Darrow School Dairy Barn Theater can host.
General Responsibilities
Darrow School faculty and staff are expected to be fully engaged in boarding school life beyond the academic day, supporting students in a range of co-curricular programming including athletics, residential life, weekend activities, and signature programs like Hands-to-Work and Springterm.
Darrow School’s mission is to create a community where students have opportunities to explore the creative spaces where ideas intersect, and solutions emerge. Our faculty and staff empower students with various backgrounds and abilities, building on each student’s talents and interests to create global citizens who understand the wider world and their place in it.
Darrow faculty and staff are expected to exemplify our guiding values:
Growth
We prioritize growth over perfection, recognizing that each individual has their own gifts, challenges, and goals to build from. Our students are safe to fail creatively, which is essential for true learning. They routinely revise and reflect on their work on their way toward mastery.
Diversity
We believe that the opportunity to learn and grow in a small, diverse community during your formative years is irreplaceable. We actively cultivate and celebrate a student body that is diverse along many dimensions, including racial and ethnic diversity, diversity of gender identity, and neurodiversity.
Community
Like the Mohicans and Shakers who inhabited this place before us, we believe in the power of an intentional community built around shared work and shared values. Darrow is deliberately small, which means that each community member is valued and influential.
Compassion
We seek to treat each other with compassion, recognizing that we may only know a small part of someone else’s story.
Authenticity
We aspire to be a place where young people become comfortable in their own skins and empowered to understand and share their authentic selves.
Essential Responsibilities of Faculty at Darrow School
Working at a boarding school differs from working anywhere else. It is a way of life more than it is a job. The academic program includes a traditional core curriculum and many elective courses. In addition to creating learning environments in the classroom, other responsibilities include spending time with students in the dorms, coaching and/or leading extra-curricular activities, advising, and weekend responsibilities.
You are responsible for creating and administering a curriculum that emphasizes a student-centered, process-oriented approach, using various source materials while focusing on written communication, critical thinking, and an active curriculum.
You will be expected to engage in other School and individual assignments as designated by the Head of School and which boarding school life demands. You will be expected to be on campus and participate in flagship events such as convocation, family weekends/teacher conferences, sports banquets, performances, symposiums, baccalaureate, and commencement. Attendance at and participation in opening faculty meetings, student registration and orientation, and year-end faculty meetings is also required.
