Up to five individuals will be invited to be guest conductors for one series of rehearsals and a concert each during the 2023-
2024 season. Each guest conductor will program the concert with input/approval from the RCO Board.
Those selected by the Search Committee for guest conductor engagements will receive an honorarium of
$2,000. One individual will be selected for the position of Music Director/Conductor beginning with the
2024-2025 season.

Reston Community Orchestra is the musical home of over (50) talented amateur (volunteer) instrumentalists from Fairfax County and beyond. We offer five free/affordable concerts per season covering a wide range of repertoire from well-known classics to the works of new and lesser-known composers, and annually showcase BIPOC soloists and composers as part of our Martin Luther King concert. The Music Director is an experienced conductor and skilled instrumentalist who shapes RCO’s musical identity.
The Music Director: • With Board approval, selects the performance repertoire for each season. • Molds the musical performances in weekly rehearsals. • Develops the orchestra’s musical and technical skills. • Directs 4-6 performances per season, and 4-5 Summer Reading sessions. • Recommends professional soloists when needed. • From time to time, commissions new pieces from composers. • Works with local music educators to spotlight young people in performance with the Orchestra. • Works with the orchestra’s board to develop and implement long-term artistic, financial, and administrative plans for the orchestra. • As the public face of the orchestra, appears at public outreach events to publicize the orchestra’s role in the Reston community.
The Music Director shall possess the following professional skills: • Broad knowledge of orchestral instruments • Broad and deep knowledge of the orchestral repertoire • Conducting • Public speaking • Verbal communication • Time management • Networking • Leadership The Music Director shall have a degree from an accredited musical conservatory or university music school.
Submit a brief cover letter describing your experience with similar groups and desire to be considered for this position, an artistic résumé with relevant educational and professional experience, and a list of at least three professional references with contact information. It is highly recommended that candidates also submit links to, or digital media of, video examples of their conducting and examples of programs/repertoire they have conducted. Large video files can be arranged to be sent separately if they exceed the size limits of your/our email system.
The Search Committee will evaluate submissions through mid-April. We will respond to all submissions. Those selected to continue will be invited to interview either in-person or via web conference.
