Summary

The Augusta Symphony seeks a talented, aspiring conductor to work closely with the Music Director and any guest conductors. The Assistant Conductor will serve as cover conductor for all classical and pops performances and may conduct educational or family concerts as assigned.

The Assistant Conductor shall receive per-service compensation as well as mentorship and tutelage through the Music Director. This is a one-year position with the possibility of a one-year extension. Candidates must be eligible for employment in the United States.

Responsibilities

• Be present at and fully prepared to conduct rehearsals and concerts, in case of main conductor’s absence
• Conduct off-stage music as required
• May be assigned to conduct in educational and/or family concert settings
• May be assigned to conduct Pops concerts (with additional compensation)
• Assist with multimedia performances, recordings and streaming projects
• Assist with programming (including Pops) if necessary
• Attend and participate and be involved in Augusta Symphony’s fundraisers and social events

Requirements:

• Possess three to five years of professional or collegiate conducting experience
• Possess broad knowledge of the orchestral repertoire
• Possess knowledge of the Pops repertoire and possess willingness to research and learn
• Must be present in Augusta, Georgia, for all orchestra services

Send three (3) videos of the candidate conducting an orchestra or ensemble, shot from the orchestra’s perspective. Videos must be 5-10 minutes in length and include a variety of repertoire.

About Augusta Symphony

Augusta Symphony is the primary professional orchestra for Augusta’s River Region and pursues its mission through annual symphonic, Pops, and family concerts that reach about 20,000 people each year. Via Community Chords Music Education, Veterans Outreach, and Group Music Therapy programs, the Augusta Symphony further strives to foster broad accessibility to live classical music performance and a lifelong appreciation of the art form among people of all ages, backgrounds, and means. Community Chords currently serve about 27,000 youth and adults in communities within a 75-mile radius from Augusta. Founded in 1954 under the baton of Music Director Harry M. Jacobs, the Augusta Symphony has evolved from a small group of 15 musicians to an 85-member professional ensemble and leading regional orchestra. The Augusta Symphony has been led by four talented conductors: Harry Jacobs until 1991, Donald Portnoy from 1991-2009, Shizuo Z Kuwahara from 2009-2016, and Maestro Dirk Meyer, who is in his sixth season as Music Director. During its 65 years of growth, the Augusta Symphony’s musicianship has enhanced, the acoustic quality of its performances has improved, and programming and outreach ...have increased to broaden the Symphony’s role in the community and engage audiences of all ages and levels of music knowledge.
