The Department of Music invites applications for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Music, Director of Opera position to begin in August 2024.
Selecting, musically preparing, coaching, and conducting one operatic or musical theatre work each semester in collaboration with Simpson Productions (See below)
Additional teaching assignments to fulfill load depending on candidate expertise and department need. Possibilities include music history, vocal coaching, music education, general education, and other courses that would enhance the music major.
Advising students and serving on faculty and departmental committees
Assisting in departmental recruiting of prospective students
The Department: Simpson College has had full accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music since 1946. Its program has long been recognized for its excellence and production quality, with many graduates performing professionally both nationally and internationally. It confers the Bachelor of Music degree in Performance and Music Education and the Bachelor of Arts in Music. Simpson Productions (founded in 2019) is an interdisciplinary, collaborative partnership between the departments of Theatre and Music at Simpson College. Doctorate or commensurate professional experience
Broad knowledge of operatic/vocal repertoire, especially works accessible to a small, undergraduate setting
Excellent piano, coaching, and conducting skills
Excellent knowledge of lyric diction in English, Italian, French, and German
Skill and desire to work with singers and instrumentalists of all abilities
Ability to manage budget and endowed funding
Experience hiring and working with instrumentalists
Ability to make collaborative contributions through activities such as coaching voice students in lesson or recital repertoire or accompanying voice recitals
Simpson’s 85-acre campus Indianola campus is a beautiful space and where the majority of classes are offered to their students.
