Each of the 4 finalists will receive $4,000 for preparing and performing one concert during the 2023-24 season. No other compensation will be provided, including for housing, transportation, or other expenses.
Contract: Renewed annually. The Avanti conductor is free to take on other engagements while under contract with FMMC.

Duties of the Position
Plan repertoire for the season with the interests, abilities, and instrumentation of members in mind
Work with the Orchestra Manager and others to secure performance venues
Work with the Orchestra Manager and others to create a roster of personnel for each concert. This may involve recruiting musicians from the greater DC area to fill certain roles
Conduct at least six rehearsals for each performance
Conduct four concerts per year
Work with young soloist competition winners who perform concerti and other solo works with the orchestra
Requirements
Minimum 2 years conducting experience preferred
Desire to work with high-level amateur musicians and young professional musicians to perform challenging orchestra repertoire
Commitment to fostering growth and creating an engaging experience for all members of the orchestra and the musical community of the greater DC area

The FMMC is the umbrella organization that sponsors the Avanti Orchestra. The FMMC was founded in 1886 and provides a wide range of musical performance opportunities for musicians of all levels. Committed to ensuring that classical music in all its forms is accessible to all, FMMC presents concerts at no cost to audiences in the metropolitan D.C. area (and not just on Friday mornings!).The Avanti Orchestra is a full symphony orchestra based in Washington, DC consisting of high-caliber amateur and professional musicians. Avanti performs four concerts per year in venues ranging from the Montgomery College Cultural Arts Center to the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater. Founded in 1943, Avanti has steadily grown in numbers and quality and performs challenging orchestral repertoire. Each season, the orchestra features as soloists world-class young winners of FMMC’s two renowned international music performance competitions, the Johansen International Competition and the Washington International Competition. Avanti’s concerts are open to the public free-of-charge, and its musicians donate their talents, performing as a public service to share their love of music with audiences in the DC metro... area. The ensemble insists on quality every step of the way, requiring auditions for membership and expecting advance preparation by musicians for rehearsals. A large majority of Avanti’s players are professionals in non-musical fields who have high-level musical skills and want to keep musical performance in their lives.
