Demonstrates artistic excellence as a musician and conductor. As the artistic leader of the Philharmonic, the Music Director will possess a highly formed artistic sensibility, the leadership to articulate and deliver on an artistic vision that serves our community, and the conducting skills to bring out the best in the musicians of the Philharmonic. The Music Director is an advocate for high artistic standards, while being attentive to relevant programs and using the repertoire to tell a meaningful story or relate to the listener in meaningful ways. In demeanor, the Music Director will use personal relationships and respect for colleagues to foster trust, stimulate individual artistry, and handle interpersonal matters with aplomb.
Has the administrative and organizational skills required of an artistic leader. The Music Director is a key member of the senior staff leadership. In that capacity, the Music Director will commit to working creatively and collaboratively with the CEO, staff colleagues, and the Board of Directors in planning and execution of artistic programs and projects. As appropriate, the Music Director will participate positively in strategy and budgeting, audience development, conflict resolution, donor fundraising, and program oversight. The Music Director will advocate for artistic priorities while staying responsive to budgetary realities. Through word and deed, the Music Director seeks to represent the organization in the most beneficial light.
Pursues a desire to communicate the orchestra’s mission and vital community presence to patrons, donors, and the community at large. As a principal spokesperson and advocate, the Music Director maintains a visible presence and makes use of personal charisma to connect the Philharmonic with community members. This occurs in speaking engagements and public appearances where the Music Director will translate music into personal experience to communicate the inspiring relevance of the Philharmonic. They maintain relationships with other artists and remain open to developing beneficial collaborative programs.

Now in its 96th Season, the Colorado Springs Philharmonic is one of the most exciting performing arts organizations in Colorado, experiencing a renaissance in its service to the community and the Pikes Peak region. The Philharmonic employs 76 part-time musicians and produces a concert season comprising three series: Masterworks, Philharmonic Pops, and Signature Series. Additionally, holiday concerts, summer engagements, and schooltime concerts are on tap each season. In all, 45 concerts are presented each year at the Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts, the Ent Center for the Arts at UCCS, and in various venues throughout the region. Performances reach more than 200,000 people every season through events and broadcasts.
Since 2011 the Colorado Springs Philharmonic has been led by Music Director Josep Caballé-Domenech, whose artistic sensibility and commitment to craft have elevated the abilities of the orchestra to heights not previously imagined or attained. Of its 76 contracted positions, many of the members live in Colorado Springs, but the Philharmonic also draws its ranks substantially from the Denver metro area for substitute and extra musicians.
The search for the Philharmonic’s next Music Director will be overseen by a committee of musicians, board members, and community volunteers who recognize the vast impact that a truly gifted Music Director can have on the orchestra, as well as the community of the Pikes Peak region. The next Music Director will preside over the Philharmonic’s 100th Anniversary, kindle new partnerships and initiatives, continue the growth of the orchestra ensemble, and solidify the Philharmonic’s role in the region as the most highly prized cultural asset.

The arts scene in Colorado Springs is rich in music, visual art, and theater organizations producing interesting programs each year with a spirit of camaraderie and collaboration. The classical music sector is dominated by the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, but also includes frequent performances of the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs, EPIC Concerts, the Colorado College Summer Music Festival, and other chamber music ensembles. Youth music programs include the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony, Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale, and the Colorado Springs Conservatory.
The Philharmonic’s home is the Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Colorado Springs. Seating 1,800 (and occasionally expanding to 2,000 seats), the Pikes Peak Center was built primarily as a symphony concert hall and is known for its pristine acoustics. The Philharmonic also performs at the Ent Center for the Arts at UCCS, an intimate 740-seat venue which was opened in 2018.
REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate will:
Have at least five years relevant experience in a major conducting position, or in frequent guest conducting engagements with professional symphony orchestras.
As the Music Director is responsible for the overall direction and musical excellence of the orchestra, a demonstrated commitment to be able to guide and direct the orchestra to achieve musical excellence.
Through word and deed, foster respect for the orchestra, the organization, and the art form.
Demonstrate the ability and desire to communicate the intrinsic and inspiring value of great music and the importance of a professional American symphony orchestra.
Possess the professional aplomb and collegial manner to work constructively and persuasively as a member of the senior leadership team and as a spokesperson for the organization.
Demonstrate a high level of professional accomplishment to enhance and grow the Philharmonic.
Demonstrate the commitment to be physically present in Colorado Springs for the rehearsals and performances requested by the CEO and Board of Directors.
Hold a history of meaningful artistic collaboration and presentation of relevant musical programs.
Full time residency in Colorado Springs is not mandatory, however the Philharmonic expects the Music Director to devote significant time and energy to establish local relationships and appropriate time to accomplish the duties of the position are required.
