The Department of Music invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Music position to begin August, 2023. The successful candidate will lead two SATB ensembles (Chamber Singers, College Choir). The position also entails offering general music courses or music education courses.
Teaching duties will include the direction of two choral ensembles, oversight of the choral program, and depending on expertise, the teaching of general education, conducting, music education methods, or choral techniques classes. Instruction in other areas, such as applied voice instruction, may be possible depending upon the candidate’s interests and strengths.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: M.M. required for appointment; D.M.A. or Ph.D. in music preferred; demonstrated experience leading choral ensembles.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: D.M.A. or Ph.D. in music; demonstrated experience leading choral ensembles at both the collegiate and elementary/secondary levels; ability to teach diverse repertoire, including classical and vernacular music representing both Western and non-Western choral traditions; demonstrated experience teaching music education coursework, including elementary music education; demonstrated experience teaching conducting; knowledge of vocal pedagogy; active participation in national and regional professional choral and music education organizations; demonstrated ability to recruit and teach both major and non-major choral singers from diverse backgrounds.
Simpson’s 85-acre campus Indianola campus is a beautiful space and where the majority of classes are offered to their students. Located in south-central Iowa, just 12 miles south of Des Moines, Simpson’s main location gives students the best of both worlds: the friendly atmosphere of a college town with the benefit of living near an exciting metropolitan area. Indianola is host to many nationally known events, including the Des Moines Metro Opera and the National Balloon Classic, which features hot air balloons competition and family entertainment. Simpson’s second campus is located in West Des Moines, Iowa, which is a part of the Greater Des Moines metro area, and serves adult and graduate students. The West Des Moines campus is easy to access, has efficient classrooms, and an environment devoted to learning for students who likely are balancing work and family life as they return to school. Classes offered at the West Des Moines campus are targeted towards Simpson’s continuing and graduate students who are looking to take classes at night or closer to home.
