Provide musical direction, singing instruction and accompaniment for departmental productions, classes, departmental auditions and special events. Instructs students in all aspects of musical theatre vocal performance.
BFA or BM in Theatre, Music or professional equivalency. 3 years teaching and/or coaching students in a pre-professional training program. 3 years professional and academic musical direction and accompaniment for rehearsal and performance. Ability to teach singing and coach students in all periods and styles of musical theatre repertoire. Ability to conduct large and small musical ensembles for musical theatre performance (including piano-conducting). Excellent musical sight-reading skills.
Ability to create orchestrations and arrangements (including orchestration reductions) in a variety of musical theatre styles.
Essential Functions and percent of time::
40%Teach private singing lessons, accompany private lessors and/or private vocal coaching & accompany 2 Acting in Musical Theatre courses annually 20%Music Direct and accompany one theatre production in the academic year season 10%Accompany all Departmental auditions & workshops with visiting artists and professional guests (as needed) 5%Participate as instructor or accompanist for weekly repertoire classes 5%Music direct and accompany one ArtsGala presentation 20%Summer responsibilities will include teaching and/or musical direction during summer season, musical/orchestral preparation for upcoming season productions, accompaniment and/or other reasonable responsibilities amounting to full-time engagement. Summer may entail specifically designed projects to support departmental initiatives
The Department of Theatre, Dance and Motion Pictures produces a season of six theatrical productions (including three musicals) and two dance concerts, as well as numerous special events and film presentations. It is also home to the Musical Theatre Initiative, an international center focused on the history, culture and craft of the musical theatre. It is housed in the newly renovated and expanded Creative Arts Center. Staff Musical Director/Vocal Coach will work in private vocal studio, classrooms, rehearsal studios and theatres on campus. Applicant must be able to climb 3 flights of stairs, work in small singing studios (8′×12′) and play piano for up to 6 hours daily with periodic breaks.
