The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD is seeking candidates to fill the position of Vocal Music Teacher for the 2021-2022 academic year. While the position is full time, some work will take place after school on a regular basis. The working hours will be staggered in the spirit of 40 hours per week to accommodate the after-school instruction.
The ideal Vocal Music Teacher is a creative, charismatic individual who can build upon the program’s current successes with joy, enthusiasm, and high standards. The candidate is able to foster strong student/teacher relationships: they are a pied piper, bringing new students into the Vocal Music program, all while mentoring students who have been with the program for some time and have grown passionate about the performing arts. This person should have a strong sense of the logistics involved in producing school concerts and performances, and work well independently and with colleagues in planning school-wide music activities.
Continue the development of the school’s vocal music program at the middle and high school levels, in consultation with the Director of Arts Education;
Direct the school’s three choirs: the middle school chorus, the high school chorus, and Shir Madness, the school’s auditioned a cappella choir;
Teach vocal music and music appreciation semester courses at the middle and high school levels (grades 6-8, 9-12 respectively);
Serve as musical director of the middle school and high school musicals, working in collaboration with the artistic director;
If appropriate, teach semester-long courses in theater at the middle school level, with the possibility to teach theater at the high school level;
Prepare student vocalists for school assemblies and programs;
Participate in a yearly choir festival for Shir Madness in collaboration with other Jewish Day schools;
Partner with colleagues throughout the school to provide interdisciplinary experiences and weave arts education throughout the school curriculum.
The candidate must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Music, Music Education, or related field, with a Master’s Degree preferred.
Candidates should have at least three years of successful teaching experience in collaborative working environments.
Ability to play piano and accompany singers is preferable, but not required.
Knowledge of Jewish music is desired, but not required.
Ability to arrange music for singers is helpful.
A working understanding of sound equipment and recording equipment is a plus.
Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) required.
Experience in differentiated instruction, project based learning, Collaborative Problem Solving, student-centered instruction and working with students with diverse learning needs preferred. Fluency with technology required.
Faculty may be asked to perform their work responsibilities on campus and/or at home. In both settings, the teacher is required to maintain a professional environment.
While on campus, classes may be operating either in person or in an alternative setting. Teachers are expected to be present and accessible for the entire school day (contracted hours), regardless of the setting.
