The School of Music in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Iowa invites applicants for a tenure-track faculty position as Director of Orchestral Studies at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor starting Fall 2021.
The School of Music seeks a motivated and collaborative individual who is committed to moving and cultivating the Orchestral Program into a clear position of embracing equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging (EDIB) through programming, engagement with prospective students, current students, faculty, staff, and the broader community.
The successful candidate will have a distinguished record as a conductor and an innovative vision and approach for leading a major collegiate orchestral program in the 21st century. The candidate will also work with faculty to prepare young musicians and student conductors for careers in an ever-changing musical, cultural and social landscape. Primary responsibilities include conducting the University of Iowa Symphony Orchestra; overseeing and administering the entire Orchestra Program; teaching graduate courses in orchestral conducting and orchestral literature; advising and mentoring DMA and MA students in orchestral conducting; supervising teaching assistants. Further responsibilities will include serving on departmental, collegiate, and professional committees, as well as planning outreach programs to engage with area high school students and their conductors. Additional duties may be assigned in accordance with areas of expertise and in consultation with the Director of the School of Music.
Master’s Degree in music
Demonstrated excellence in conducting at the professional and/or college/university level for at least five years
Demonstrated record of creative programming
Doctorate in Music or equivalent professional experience
Evidence of innovation in leading an orchestra program
Demonstrated experience teaching and advising graduate (MA & DMA) orchestral conducting students
Demonstrated community engagement and experience working with youth and/or community orchestras
For consideration at the Associate Professor rank the candidate must have a demonstrated and sustained record of effective teaching, scholarship and professional activity that would merit appointment as Associate Professor
Evidence of creative activity and research as demonstrated through both performances and presentations/publications

Ten concert programs spanning at least the past five years
