Job Summary: The Director of Education and Community Engagement is responsible for planning, developing, administering and evaluating all education and community outreach programs of the Louisville Orchestra with the objective of increasing and enhancing public enjoyment of classical music and other offerings of the Louisville Orchestra. Supervise all volunteers and staff involved in delivering any aspects of the programs. Plan and submit to the Executive Director a budget for the education programs. Develop and oversee the production of all educational materials. Represent the Louisville Orchestra to other arts, education and civic institutions to promote constructive working partnerships in the community.
Duties and Responsibilities
Prepares and executes a comprehensive education plan for the Louisville Orchestra including the establishment of an Education Committee and identifying new educational goals, objectives and initiatives appropriate to the Orchestra and the community, including youth concerts, lecture-demonstrations, family concerts, school concerts, adult education and volunteer programs.
Develops and fosters relationships with educators, community arts leaders and musicians.
Promotes, coordinates and executes the education program of the Louisville Orchestra by identifying concert venues, brochure production, promotional mailings, repertoire coordination, preparation of study guides, fostering of educator relationships; works with the Director of Artistic Operations in the coordination of concert production and school visitations by conductors and musicians.
Serves as primary staff liaison with the Education Committee of the Louisville Orchestra.
In consultation with the Director of Marketing, oversees the marketing and ticketing for all educational programs including brochures, newsletters, flyers and advertisements, as necessary.
Assists appropriate staff members with select educational programs featuring the Orchestra by researching and proposing programming, guest artists, guest conductors, appropriate concert dates and venues. Assists staff with artistic questions and concerns.
Keeps the Music Director informed of significant events pending in the educational activities of the Orchestra; responds appropriately and promptly to their needs, inquiries, suggestions and requests.
Provides support to the Association of the Louisville Orchestra’s Young Artists Competition.
Budget and Planning
Assists the Executive Director, Music Director and Board in establishing appropriate education and outreach goals for the Louisville Orchestra.
In consultation with the above-named people, develops programs and plans for achieving these goals; works with Director of Artistic Operations to coordinate all activities within the master calendar.
Works closely with the Chief Financial Officer to develop budgets for each program; monitors the progress of each program and adjusts plans as necessary.
Identifies educational trends that may present new opportunities for the Orchestra; recommends a course of action that takes this information into account.
Collaborates with the Chief Development Officer in developing funding for ongoing and new educational initiatives.
Collaborates with the Director of Marketing and Director of Artistic Operations in the implementation of all education programs; coordinates with other Orchestra activities.
In consultation with the Music Director, directs the Orchestra musicians’ involvement in ensemble events sponsored by or supporting the Orchestra’s education efforts.
Liaison to UpTempo, a volunteer group whose mission is to provide funding and resources to support the Louisville Orchestra.
Manages support staff in the implementation of departmental programs and services.
Attends concerts of local school groups; act as liaison between the Orchestra and community educational institutions.
Keeps abreast of recent research on music education; maintain a collection of current resource materials.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree or music education or performance; 3-5 years experience in significant music education environment; superior interpersonal skills; knowledge of orchestra repertoire; substantial experience in a broad range of orchestra music (including classical, contemporary and symphonic pops). Demonstrated success in organizing large projects with multiple stakeholders; ability to read music and experience with orchestras is required. Creative, entrepreneurial, and dedicated to finding ways for people to participate actively in music; highly organized and able to work independently to complete projects on a deadline; proficient in MS Office applications and social networking platforms; ability to manage events in a flexible, calm and professional manner. Background check required.
