Impro Theatre is looking for a VIRTUAL TECHNICAL DIRECTOR (VTD). This individual is an experienced technician with a theatre background who has interest in online theatre. This job is great for all theatre professionals with a background in tech who have experience with live streaming performances: Tech Directors, Light and Sound Designers, Board Ops, and Stage Managers. The VTD is interested in researching, developing, and experimenting with online performance tools (hardware, streaming platforms, broadcast software, etc.). They are passionate about improving the quality of online performances from a technical standpoint. The Virtual Technical Director (VTD) serves as a key team member and an active participant in Impro Theatre’s online presence. The VTD responsibilities include providing technical support for Impro Theatre shows and online rehearsals. This includes working with the director and/or faculty member in developing the tech aspects of the show, attending rehearsals, putting together music cues and SFX, and broadcasting the shows. The VTD reports to the interim school administrator and the producing artistic director.
Production Management • Work with producers and directors to create the best show possible. • Coordinate with work-study supervisor to schedule work-study technicians.
Training • Supervise and train online technical improvisers.
Development • Stay up-to-speed with current best practices for virtual theatre production. • Research and experiment with new tools and streaming platforms. • Discover creative improvements (for example: improved transitions on OBS, opportunities with image overlays, possibilities with music and sfx).
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
• Internet-based technical skills, including Zoom and OBS (Streamlabs OBS, OBS.Ninja, etc.). • Experience with and interest in learning more about streaming platforms (Twitch, YouTube, Facebook Live, etc.). • Experience working in theatre production. • Understanding of narrative improvisation (or interest in learning about narrative improvisation).

HOURS & COMPENSATION • This is a new position with a review period of 3 months. • We anticipate this position will require 20-40 hours per week. • Compensation is based on experience and is negotiable.

The Virtual Technical Director can operate from any location with the understanding that our schedules are based on Los Angeles time.
