The Amarillo Symphony (Amarillo, Texas) announces an opening for the position of Music Director & Conductor to lead our orchestra and bring classical music to the Texas Panhandle community. The successful candidate will commence duties in our 98th season, 2022-2023.
Provide artistic vision and musical leadership for a professional regional orchestra with a $1.9 million annual budget.
Conduct all rehearsals and performances for at least six (6) double subscription concert programs. Additional “Happy Holiday Pops” concert available and other concerts upon request.
Attract and retain quality musicians, audition new members as necessary along with orchestra audition panels.
In partnership with Executive Director and artistic advisory members, curate season programming and selection of guest artists who provide cultural and educational value and engage the community.
Develop long-range artistic plans for the orchestra in conjunction with the Executive Director and artistic advisory members, particularly the 100th season in 2024-2025.
Undergraduate music degree required.
Demonstrable experience in programming and conducting with a professional orchestra.
A demonstrated commitment to innovative and engaging programming tailored to a growing audience.
Experience in presenting inspiring educational and community programs.
Ability to serve as the public face of the organization with a strong desire to become an integral part of the community.
Strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills with musicians, board members, administrative staff, and community members.
Good knowledge of the orchestral field, particularly a working network of guest soloists.

Founded in 1924—and approaching its 100th season—the Amarillo Symphony continues to be a cultural leader of the Panhandle of Texas and the surrounding communities. The Symphony performs 7 double subscription concerts each season, Holiday Pops concerts, and education and community engagement performances to serve a variety of populations in a 25,000 square mile area per year.
