The National Symphony Orchestra, in residence at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., engages audiences locally, across the country, and around the world through excellence in performance and education. Maestro Gianandrea Noseda began his tenure as Music Director in 2017 and since then has increased the Orchestra’s prominence both nationally and internationally, most notably through engagements at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, soon-to-be-released commercial recordings, and through a much-anticipated upcoming tour to Japan and China. Under his baton, the Orchestra has added new musicians, garnered rave reviews in national outlets, and substantially increased classical subscriptions. The NSO’s education and community engagement work ranges from nurturing young musicians through programs such as the Summer Music Institute and Youth Fellowship; engaging new audiences through free or low-cost concerts in the Concert Hall, in underserved communities in D.C. through In Your Neighborhood, in some of D.C’s hottest new venues such as The Anthem and Echostage, and through collaborations with chart-topping artists such as Common, Ben Folds, and Diana Ross; and welcoming the youngest listeners to family-friendly concerts. With its 90th anniversary approaching in 2021, the NSO is poised to soar to new heights.
The NSO Development team seeks a motivating leader and creative fundraiser ready to expand the NSO’s sponsorship program and continue to build on a robust base of institutional support for our nation’s Orchestra. The Manager of NSO Sponsorships & Institutional Giving manages all sponsorships of local, national, and international concerts and events, as well as all restricted and unrestricted foundation and governments grants in support of the NSO’s artistic, education, and community engagement programming. This position manages the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of all prospective donors, along with the stewardship of all current donors. Current sponsorship opportunities include the NSO’s annual black-tie Season Opening Gala, concerts and programs in D.C. and across the U.S., and national and international tours such as the NSO’s upcoming tour to Japan and China.
This position reports to the Chief Development Officer of NSO Development, and must also work collaboratively with other development management and staff, as well as with external vendors. The Manager works with the NSO CDO and NSO leadership in the management of the artistic team and Board of Directors, and specifically oversees the activities of the NSO Board’s Corporate Development Committee, working closely with the Committee’s Chair to focus on strategies for increasing corporate fundraising for the NSO.
The incumbent manages his/her time, resources, and work load to maximize productivity and financial results; exercises discretion; evaluates complex internal and external relationships; and regularly takes initiative to advance campaign objectives and goals. In addition to meeting annual fundraising goals, the Manager is also a member of the Development Department’s leadership team, responsible for developing and implementing Department-wide efforts such as the four-year Development strategic plan and cross-team “pillar” initiatives. This position oversees a team of three direct reports, including two Assistant Managers and one Assistant.
Duties and Responsibilities:
65% Fundraising for: NSO institutional general operating support, artistic and educational program sponsorships, the NSO Season Opening Gala, national and international tours (every 1-2 years), and special projects
Initiate and build ongoing relationships with high-level executives at current NSO corporate partners and new prospects through meetings, phone calls, and entertainment
Oversee the identification, research, cultivation, and solicitation of prospective new corporate, foundation, and government donors
Develop and supervise the preparation of creative, individually tailored written and/or alternative media presentations for each solicitation
Engage with members of the NSO Board, Kennedy Center Board, Kennedy Center senior staff, and external partners to assist with and strengthen solicitations
Identify and leverage sponsorship opportunities for new or one-of-a-kind projects that are specific to the interests of particular prospects and have the potential for attracting major gifts
Lead department-wide fundraising campaigns for special NSO projects such as the annual Season Opening Gala and major national and international tours, coordinating closely with colleagues across the Kennedy Center to secure support from corporate, foundation, government, and individual donors
Manage the personalized communication strategies with and the fulfillment of customized sponsorship benefits and reporting requirements for all donors:
Coordinate with special events, Kennedy Center and NSO staff, and donor staff in the planning and execution of events that involve donors/sponsors, including Board and Committee meetings, and benefit and cultivation events
Supervise the preparation of interim and final written and financial reports
Oversee the creation of sponsorship recognition signage and fulfillment of donor ticket banks
Serve as the primary point-of-contact for the NSO Board’s Corporate Development Committee:
Coordinate meeting times with Committee Chair
Create meeting materials and agendas in collaboration with the Committee Chair
Manage follow-up with individual Committee members to leverage their personal corporate connections for NSO sponsorship
20% Strategic Planning
Work with the Chief Development Officer of NSO Development, NSO and Kennedy Center management and program staff, and Board members in developing, implementing and evaluating long-term goals and strategies for support.
Act as a primary liaison to the programming and education staff:
Solicit information about program/project/festival plans as they are developed
Evaluate current programs for funding potential and recommend new initiatives based on known interests of funders
Seek out new funding possibilities to establish institutional priorities and areas where collaborative efforts will advance the Center towards achievement of its goals
Collect program metrics and analyze budgets to ensure accurate reporting and alignment in fundraising priorities
Evaluate campaign revenue and expense progress and provide timely, accurate reports to the Director and Vice President
Supervise two Assistant Managers and one Assistant in managing NSO corporate, foundation, and government fundraising campaigns, as outlined above
Provide sufficient training and coaching to direct reports and support staff
Contribute to the Development Department’s strategic planning initiatives through joint leadership of core pillars

Bachelor’s degree required, graduate degree in a related field beneficial
Five or more years in professional development positions, specifically sponsorships and grant writing
Experience managing fundraising staff
Solid understanding of standard non-profit accounting standards and practices and ability to analyze revenue and expense budgets
Computer literacy is required
Working knowledge of the performing arts and orchestral music is preferred
