African Drumming Specialist

The College at Brockport, State University of New York is accepting applications for an African Drumming Specialist and musician to serve as Music Director of Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble in the Department of Dance.
The African music and dance program at Brockport has a history of curriculum and performances beginning in the 1970s, with Sankofa concerts beginning in the late 1980s. The Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble are an integral part of The College at Brockport's cultural life.
Specialize in African Diasporan music forms with a concentration in West African rhythms, specifically of Guinea, Mali, Ivory Coast, and Senegal. Collaborate with the Artistic Director of Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble. Music Director for Sankofa performances, which include coaching, instructing, and leading ensemble musicians; touring regionally, nationally, and internationally with Sankofa. Maintains, cares for, and repairs the inventory of African musical instruments. Teaches African drumming classes with a focus on traditional rhythms. Attends faculty meetings, participate in departmental governance and contributing to departmental service.
Minimum of 8-10 years of professional drumming experience in traditional African music. Experience teaching traditional African drumming rhythms. Knowledge of African musical instruments for upkeep and maintenance.
Bachelor's degree by time of appointment from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university. Established relationships to African-based artist communities. Demonstrated ability to play other instruments from the African Diaspora such as balaphone, karin, schekere, and bata. Teaching experience in higher education. Possession of driver's license and ability to complete university van training.
Department Description Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance, the Department of Dance offers MFA, MA, BFA, BA/BS and Dance Minor degrees, with a modern dance emphasis. African dance courses supplement the curriculum as well as a comprehensive selection of other dance and movement study forms. The Department is renowned for its African dance program and Sankofa: the African Dance and Drum Ensemble. The Department maintains an active performance schedule in two theaters with regular guest artist residencies. There are approximately 10 graduate students and 100 undergraduate majors in the program. Facilities include five large fully equipped studios, a faculty warm-up space, a 250-seat proscenium theater, a large studio theatre, fully equipped conditioning room, costume and scenic shops, and video and audio editing equipment. The region is known for its natural beauty, including Lake Ontario, the Genesee River (with three major waterfalls in Letchworth State Park), and the Finger Lakes region with its notable vineyards and wineries.
