The University of the South seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor of Music to serve as Music Director of the Sewanee Symphony Orchestra with teaching responsibilities within the Department of Music.
A successful candidate hired at the Associate level will be considered for department chair. Full-time, tenure track, effective July 1, 2020.
The successful candidate will demonstrate passion for student music making and creative programming, will cultivate student leadership in instrumental music, and will draw students to participate in orchestral activities. She or he will be part of an energetic, talented music department, and will commit to being a positive force in the Department’s effort to foster an invigorating and innovative 21st-century liberal arts music program. She or he will manifest mature expertise as an orchestral conductor and the ability to inspire musicians of diverse backgrounds and abilities. Classroom and/or applied teaching is a critical component of this position, and ongoing professional activity is essential for tenure. The successful conductor will both recruit student musicians and engage the public, and experience with community engagement initiatives and arts management is desirable.
The successful candidate will have an advanced degree in conducting or another music subfield (e.g., piano performance, an orchestral instrument, ethnomusicology). DMA or PhD preferred, ABD acceptable at the application stage. Candidates not pursuing the terminal degree must document an outstanding record as an orchestral conductor and passion for undergraduate teaching.
