The Director of Music oversees all curricular aspects of music at Westover. The role includes directing two choral groups, overseeing ensemble group teachers and programming as well as an extensive private music lesson program, acting as musical director for the annual musical and advising the student-led a cappella group. Work with the other performing arts directors in drama and dance, respectively, will include general collaboration, setting schedules, and coordinating performances.
Music is part of the culture of Westover and this position will help coordinate music for our weekly non-denominational all-school chapel assembly and supporting other traditions throughout the year. Additionally, there are opportunities to teach music electives, often co-taught with the Art History teacher, as well as AP Music Theory depending on the interest and inclination of the successful candidate.
The ideal candidate is one who possesses a B.A. and/or an advanced degree in Music and has at least three years of experience teaching, conducting, and/or performing choral music. Westover seeks teachers who are passionate about their subject and their pedagogy, who prioritize integrating diverse voices into their courses, and who collaborate with colleagues on departmental and school-wide objectives. The Arts Department Chair oversees all aspects of the Arts curriculum at Westover. The ideal candidate will be an outstanding teacher and trusted colleague, a highly effective communicator, adaptable and flexible to changes of circumstance, a hard worker, enthusiastic, compassionate, and student-focused with a sense of humor. Additionally, the successful candidate will be a strong manager who can lead and inspire others in the community as well as manage administrative tasks such as the departmental budget.
The Arts Department Chair reports to the Assistant Head of School and works closely with the Dean of Academics and the Curriculum Committee. Key responsibilities include:
Bringing a fresh vision for the arts at Westover - what is the role of the arts at an all-girls boarding school in the 21st century?
Oversight and implementation of the Arts courses
Student placements in appropriate courses
Providing support and conducting reviews of members of the department
Hiring teachers, including full-time teachers and part-time private lesson music teachers and dance teachers
Developing departmental cohesion, particularly between visual and performing arts practitioners
Managing the budget for each aspect of the Arts department
