Central College’s department of Music seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor for a tenure line appointment beginning August 2020. Successful candidates will possess a DMA or PhD (ABD considered), and have a strong commitment to teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts setting.
The Assistant/Associate Professor will conduct the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and instrumental education courses such as Conducting, Methods and Materials, and Jazz Band Methods. The Director of Bands will also organize annual tours and state-wide recruiting events. Opportunities are also available to teach applied lessons (preferably brass) and core courses in the Liberal Arts curriculum. The candidate must be enthusiastic about making connections with our local band directors, and will be active throughout the state as a leader in instrumental education and wind band conducting.
Central College offers a B.A. in music and in music education. The DEPARTMENT OF MUSIChas seven full-time faculty who offer a wide range of courses in music theory, literature, and applied techniques. A number of choral and instrumental ensembles are available for all students, and about a quarter of all students participate. Private study is available in strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, voice, organ, piano and harpsichord. The Department of Music also works closely with the college’s celebrated Education Department to deliver an excellent educational experience for our students, and to supply the state of Iowa with highly qualified educators. The Department of Music is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
