About the Community Youth Chorus: The first Seattle Symphony Community Youth Chorus (CYC) will launch fall 2019. This unique chorus will be comprised of high school students from throughout King County with geographic equity as a key program goal. These students will not only sing on three concerts with the Seattle Symphony they will also work with composer Angelique Poteat to compose a new work for orchestra and chorus which they will premier with the Seattle Symphony in June 2020 as part of the Symphony’s Beethoven Festival. The goal of this composition is to create a new work that will be representative of the youth voice of all King County.
Position Overview: The Seattle Symphony is seeking an experienced choral conductor to lead the Community Youth Chorus in preparing for three concert sets with the Seattle Symphony and work collaboratively with Community Youth Chorus Composition Director Angelique Poteat to support the students of the CYC in composing a new work for orchestra and chorus. The position will run from August 2019 through June 2020.
Develop 28-week Community Youth Chorus syllabus with Composer and Seattle Symphony staff
Participate in chorus auditions
Auditions to be held September 24, 25, 26 & 27, 2019
Collaborate with Seattle Symphony staff and Composer to plan all CYC rehearsals
Prepare CYC for all performances with the Seattle Symphony
Conduct all CYC rehearsals
Create a close community among the teen choristers from many different regions of King County and backgrounds
Successful evidence of leading youth choruses
Experience working with teens from a wide variety of backgrounds
Degree in music education, music performance or comparable experience
Knowledge and experience with symphonic repertoire
We expect a commitment to social justice, and a willingness to engage in personal and organizational reflection, critical dialogue and growth around issues of race and other oppressions.
Community Youth Chorus Auditions – September 24-27, 2019 times TBD
Sundays, October 2019 through June 2020 as well as additional Seattle Symphony rehearsals and concerts.

**Sample Rehearsal Plan
Please prepare a two-hour rehearsal plan for SATB youth chorus (ages 14-18). The lesson plan should incorporate preparation for the upcoming Seattle Symphony Family Concert (repertoire includes Carol of the Bells and Let it Snow), a community building exercise, and elements of compositional practice. The rehearsal will be divided between music rehearsal and music composition.
