The Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony is seeking a full-time Interim Music Director for a 9-12 month position beginning in August of 2019 through May of 2020, with a possible extension to our Summer Strings program through July of 2020.
Formed in 1976 and initially known as the Springfield Area Youth Symphony, Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony (SVYS) provides the only opportunity for an orchestral experience at the elementary and secondary school levels in Sangamon County. After the Springfield area schools eliminated orchestra classes from their curriculum in the 1970's, parents, music teachers, and musicians created Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony to keep orchestral music education alive in the Springfield area. Since the organization was established, SVYS has adapted to the community in a variety of ways. Initially the program provided advanced ensembles for students, but as the program settled, beginner and intermediate ensembles were added to create a comprehensive program that advances musicians from the beginnings of learning a stringed instrument through mastering the many skills and techniques required to become a more developed musician. SVYS provides an advanced youth orchestra that not only includes strings, but also wind, brass and percussion players. SVYS also supports an adult community orchestra.
Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony's mission is to enrich our community through quality orchestral experiences and education.
