As a strategic partner to the Executive Director and Director of Content and Production, From the Top’s Music Director will play a pivotal role in the development of our country’s most outstanding classically trained young musicians by leading all facets of musical direction. As a member of the organization’s senior leadership team, he/she will conceive of and curate new creative projects while overseeing the musical content of From the Top’s NPR radio program, live tour and cross-genre video series, and non-broadcast and fundraising live events. The Music Director will collaborate artistically with major presenters, orchestras and musical organizations across the country to further From the Top’s reach and network. He/she will also lead From the Top’s Admissions and Scholarship department, providing strategy and direction for the identifying and recruiting of outstanding young musicians nationwide. Additionally, the Music Director will play a key role in selecting performers and repertoire for all artistic projects at From the Top, shaping the artistic experiences for all program participants. He/she is expected to travel frequently to, attend, and provide musical coaching and direction at all radio and video rehearsals, live shows and recordings.

Key duties and responsibilities
Musical direction of From the Top live concerts/radio program including:
Participation in presenter programming conversations
Collaboration with guest hosts; exploration of their personal programming interests and synthesizing their artistic vision with From the Top’s values
The selection of young performers and repertoire for each radio concert recording
Supervision of all edits/cuts of music
Travel to and attendance at all live radio recordings (approximately 10-20 each year) to oversee/coach musical performances including leading radio/video re-takes
Musical direction, casting and support on From the Top cross-genre video projects including:
Travel to and attendance at all video recordings to oversee/coach musical performances including leading audio re-takes along with the guest artistic collaborators
Oversight of recruitment and admissions strategy including:
Supervision of Scholarship and Recruitment Manager and oversight of annual recruitment strategy and live audition tour
In conjunction with Scholarship and Recruitment Manager, development and engagement of a recruitment network of private teachers, youth orchestras, and festivals
Collaboration with the members of From the Top’s Admissions and Scholarship department to select 20 Jack Kent Cooke Young Artists grantees annually
Consult, recruit, and help program musical content for non-broadcast and fundraising live events
Classical music training required
Understanding of musical learning trajectory, specifically teen development (ages 8 – 18) and current standards of accomplishment in multiple instruments preferred
Experienced communicator, with experience specifically in liaising with young musicians and their parents preferred
A highly creative and organized problem-solver with superb attention to detail, the ability to work independently and the ability to develop original artistic programming
Strong computer skills; experience with MAC computers, Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word and Excel), and database management strongly preferred. Raiser’s Edge experience a plus
Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills, and able to keep a high level of discretion regarding confidential records
Available and willing for frequent national travel
Availability and willingness to work evenings and/or weekend events
Must complete criminal history and identity check screenings
Ability to engage in light physical activity such as lifting boxes weighing up to 20 pounds
Bachelor's degree in Music or related field required; Master’s degree in Music or related field preferred
At least three years of experience in one or more of the following areas: classical music adjudication, teaching, institutional admissions or artistic programming
Valid driver’s license and willingness to drive
