The University of Pikeville in Pikeville, Kentucky, seeks a dynamic and creative professional interested in establishing, directing, and managing the University’s contemporary vocal music program. The Director is responsible for the overall program of vocal music at the University, providing students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular vocal activities and ensure compliance with all state and university requirements. The position also includes teaching two didactic courses in the music area and providing support for private voice lessons. The expectations of the Contemporary Vocal Music Director include: commitment to the mission of the University of Pikeville, scheduling, conducting practices, travel planning, recruiting, fundraising, teaching, budgeting, and completion of any duties assigned by the supervisor.
Recruit students for the development of a show choir program and other contemporary vocal music groups.
Provide artistic and musical direction for the show choir and other musical groups.
Meet assigned recruiting goals for each year.
Manage program budget and scholarship budget.
Teach as needed in the music program.
Recruit and teach private voice students in support of music minor.
Design show choir performances.
Select appropriate music and modify musical arrangement as needed.
Monitor the academic progress of students in the contemporary vocal music programs.
Ensure eligibility of students in the contemporary vocal music programs.
Retain and graduate a satisfactory number of students.
Ensure a program that is of high quality.
Plan appropriate tours (fundraising, friend-raising, and recruiting) and competition travel.
Participate in community and campus life opportunities.
Other duties as assigned.
Master's degree required. Doctoral degree will be preferred.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Formal vocal training
Expertise and/or familiarity with several different contemporary musical styles
Familiarity with contemporary harmony and music theory
Piano skills for basic accompaniment of students is a plus; preference will be given to candidates with coaching experience
Ability to communicate/demonstrate/coach choreography for a show choir is desirable
Must be a motivated self-starter with high expectations
Aptitude for embracing diversity in individuals, perspectives, musical styles, and curriculum
Strong proactive approach to problem solving
Ability to exercise good judgment in problem resolution situations
Strong teamwork skills
Enthusiasm for music and the creative process
Enthusiasm for and commitment to teaching
Must maintain a valid driver’s license
Minimum level of English: C1 (Common European Language Framework)
