The Boston Civic Symphony is seeking a part-time or consultant Executive Director, who will work with the Board and Music Director to develop and execute a vision and long-term growth strategy for the city’s second-oldest symphony orchestra.
The ideal candidate will have managerial or executive experience in the arts, and will be ready and excited to lead a venerable institution into the future, through a combination of artistic and educational collaborations, strategic fundraising, board development, marketing, and public relations.
The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, and works closely with the Board President, Treasurer, and Music Director to create and execute the orchestra’s artistic vision. In addition, the Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day administrative operations of the orchestra, and oversees the duties of two part time employees (the General Manager and Box Office Manager).
It is estimated that this position will require an average of 15-20 hours per week, much of which will be done remotely on a flexible schedule (the orchestra does not have an office), making this a suitable part-time position for a performer, music teacher, parent, or someone who is a consultant for other clients in the arts.
Applications will be accepted through March 1, 2019. This position will be filled as soon as a candidate is chosen, though the actual start date is negotiable. The current Executive Director will remain on staff for one month after the new Executive Director starts to ensure a smooth and successful transition.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
Works with Board President and Fundraising Committee to set and achieve fundraising goals for season
Works with the Board to cultivate Board development—i.e. adding appropriate new board members, defining and focusing the role of the Board, and advising the Board of best practices for governance.
Composes and sends regular mailings soliciting sponsorship/donations from individuals
Plans fund-raising events, e.g., wine-tasting, including issuing of invitations, ticket sales, and day-of-event-logistics
Identifies potential grant/sponsorship opportunities and writes these proposals
Acts as chief liaison with donors, acknowledging contributions via e-mail, personal letter, or phone call throughout the year
Books venues for concerts and rehearsals
Negotiates fees/compensation with guests artists/managers and issues contracts
Makes travel arrangements for guest soloists
Advises board on ticket pricing for season
Develops and executes marketing and PR strategy including:
Recommending publicity budget for year
Negotiating and placing paid ads both in traditional and digital media
Working with designer/printer/mail house to create and distribute marketing materials, including season brochure, posters and flyers
Developing Social Media strategy; posting regularly and/or coordinating offical social media posts made by orchestra members
Writing and sending blast emails on a regular basis
At least five years’ work experience, preferably in non-profit management
Fundraising experience and knowledge of current fundraising trends in the arts
Ability to multi-task, and continue to work on long-term projects while addressing immediate needs
Exceptional organizational, oral and written communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills
Strong love of classical music, and knowledge and passion to act as the orchestra’s ambassador and advocate in the community
Telecommuting is allowed.

Founded in 1924 by the late educator, conductor and composer, Joseph Wagner, the Boston Civic Symphony is the second oldest symphony orchestra in the city. As one of Boston’s most respected musical organizations, the BCS has distinguished itself from other local musical groups through its focus on presenting an unusually broad range of music by exceptionally skilled students and amateurs and through its emphasis on developing a broad-based audience. The BCS has defined its objectives as follows:
1. To encourage attendance by a diverse population from the Greater Boston area by offering moderately priced tickets and by distribution of a number of free tickets to underserved populations in Boston.
2. To provide orchestral training and experience under competent direction for teachers, students of music who are preparing for professional careers, and skilled amateurs.
3. To offer performances of unusual and contemporary works, with a special focus on American compositions, with leading soloists. The BCS performs three major concerts and one fund-raisers each year, which offer a range of classical and contemporary music.
The BCS’s presentation of works by masters like Moza...rt, Beethoven and Brahms is balanced by its performances of pieces by contemporary American composers.
Concerts are held at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall and the Fine Art Center at Regis College in Weston, MA.
