The Missoula Symphony Association seeks a Music Director and Conductor for the Missoula Symphony Orchestra. The Music Director is the primary face and personality of the organization to the community. The Music Director is responsible for the artistic operation, musical preparation and development of the orchestra. Audience development, community outreach and educational outreach will be major components of the Music Director’s duties. The Music Director is expected to be a primary and visible partner in the organization's efforts in audience and patron development, and in broadening and deepening fundraising sources. The Music Director will participate in the evolving artistic vision of the Missoula Symphony Association and will relate openly to the Association’s constituents. The Music Director will conduct auditions for new orchestra musicians and evaluate existing players. The individual will select and plan the concert season in consultation with the Program Committee and within annual budget guidelines.
The ideal candidate will have significant musical talent and conducting experience, highly effective rehearsal technique and a proven ability to provide high caliber performances. The candidate will have clear expectations for how the music is to be played and will be able to appropriately communicate those expectations to musicians of varied backgrounds and experience. The candidate will also have the ability to motivate and mentor musicians of varied backgrounds and experience. The candidate will document proven history of audience development. The candidate will document proven history of successful educational programs, and will have a vision for youth outreach. The Music Director will be capable of creating innovative but market-sensitive programming, have strong interpersonal and motivational skills, and be an excellent communicator. The Music Director will have experience working with a Chorale. The individual will help shape the organization’s vision and mission.

In its 64th season, the Missoula Symphony Association consists of an outstanding community orchestra made up of avocational, pre-professional and professional musicians, including faculty and students from the University of Montana School of Music, and a high quality volunteer chorale. The concert season includes five pairs of subscription concerts, two youth concerts, a family concert, an outdoor summer concert, and a variety of outreach activities. The Missoula Symphony Association also hosts the Montana Suzuki Institute each summer, and a year-round program of monthly Suzuki group classes. The current operating budget is approximately $650,000. The orchestra and chorale serve a market area of some 200,000 people in western Montana.
